Is the Digital Teleconverter on Olympus cameras any good?

I have been testing the Olympus Digital teleconverter lately. It can double your focal length on your M.Zuiko lens. That why it is very tempting. Wouldn’ t it be great to have extra reach on you trips if travelling only with one lens?

But since it is a digital teleconvetert, it will upscale the cropped image you see from the EVF or the LCD. How bad is the loss in image quality?

Check out this video and the images below to see for yourself.

As you can see the difference is not big, but the upscaled raw-filer is a bit better.

6 Tips for Travel photograph

Travel photography is most likely one of the most popular genres of photography. We all do it, but we all have a different approach to it. Some of us only want to record the memories the people we traveled with and the things we saw. The photography itself is only for recording memories. For some of us, it is the way to have time for photography. The everyday life is busy and the time we get to travel is the time we make our photographs.

In my video about Travel photography, I give tips on how to get better images no matter what your reason to photograph on trips is.

I have turned the Warm Color off. If you like the Warm Colors and do not do much post processing and shoot jpgs then you might want to have the Warm Colors On. If shooting only jpgs and post images online, sRGB is fine.

Olympus OM-D E-M1X - Best Exposure Settings

In my latest video (14.5.2019) I was talking about the experience that I have had with the E-M1 X now that I have used it for a couple of months.

I promised to write down the best settings for exposure.

Menu D1 > InfoSettings > LV-Info and in one of the Custom setting choose Highlight&Shadow
Menu I > Info Settings > in one of the Custom setting choose Highlight&Shadow
Shooting Menu 1 > Picture Mode > Muted > Contrast -2, Saturation -2
Menu G > Keep Warm Color > Off

Menu G > Color Space > AdobeRGB

Menu D3 > Histogram Settings > Set Highlight to the value you want the red color to appear and the same goes with the Shadow (blue color) I have set Hightlight to 253 and Shadow to 3.

Menu B1 > Dial Function > Set on each exposure modes the back dial to exposure compensation.

These settings will show the image on the LCD and EVF so that it is perfectly exposured when adjusting the exposure compensatuion so that there is no red or blue flag color in the scene. Usually you can have a half a stop brighter becouse the image that shows in the jpg and the final image is a raw-file.

Very durable HDMI port on the Olympus OM-D E-M1X!

I quite often use an external monitor when making videos with Olympus OM-D E-M1X. I either have an Atomos Ninja Inferno recorder or a Feelworld FW568 field monitor. The recorder or monitor gets the info via an HDMI cable.

The problem with this method is that most cameras have a micro HDMI port. It is ok to get the signal from the camera to the monitor or the recorder, but the micro HDMI port is not usually very durable.

I had a video gig this week and I used my Manfrotto 561B HDV monopod. I rested the camera against my body. When started to shoot video again the monitor was black. Then I realized that the HDMI cable was bent and was still attached to the camera. This usually means that HDMI port in camera is broken.

The bend HDMI cable

The bend HDMI cable

But luckily it was the HDMI cable that was bend. The port on the camera is ok! So it looks like the E-M1X can not only be washed under running water, but the HDMI port is more durable than the HDMI cable!

Extended Low ISO - Is it worth using?

Every camera has extended ISO. In the upper end where the ISO is pushed, I do not recommend using them.

But the extended low ISO is worth testing. In theory, the image quality should be better. The ISO is pulled and the brighter images get darker and that will reduce noise.

Laowa 7.5mm F2 - Ultra Wide Angle Lens

Last week I had a chance to test a Ultra Wide Angle Lens, the Laowa 7.5mm f2. Laowa is made by Venus Optics.
